High Performance Testing reveals areas of opportunity for HP Manager Emma Swanwick

Monday, 25 January 2010

On 9 and 10 January, Triathlon SA High Performance Manager Emma Swanwick conducted a battery of Tests on 38 of the countries top triathletes. The athletes were selected by Swanwick on the basis of their results in 2009.

The tests included functional movement analysis, fatigue testing and a cybex test. The results, which are being sent to the athletes and their coaches with recommendations, show a trend that although South African Triathletes are very strong on the run, they require some work in the swim and cycle disciplines.

“It does not help that our athletes can run with the best in the world when they need to make up a deficit in time lost over the swim and cycle legs,” said Swanwick after analyzing the test results. “There is a definite trend that South African triathletes on the whole seem to be battling with form and pacing in those two areas of the race.”

What the testing has done is that the athletes are now taking a bigger interest in their preperation and Swanwick has been peppered with questions from both athletes and coaches alike about training, form, areas of weakness and the dialogue is now open.
