Broken Collarbone puts spanner in works for Carla Germishuys
Tuesday, 02 February 2010
What should have been an enjoyable training ride with her finance Dreyer Van Huyssteen in Groenkloof Nature reserve a week and a half ago, turned into a painful experience for Carla Germishuys as she hit a rock and went tumbling over her handlebars. “I did not see the rock and next thing I knew I hit the ground and had this incredible pain in my shoulder.”
That pain was a broken collarbone and seriously put a dent in the plans of Carla for 2010. “I start rehab in about two weeks or so which should take around 4-6 weeks. Hopefully I can start some sort of training in about 4 weeks time. Right now my shoulder is painful and its very frustrating as my movement is very limited. The good thing though, is that I am getting married in April and I was able to get so much sorted now that I cannot train right now, so I guess it is a blessing in disguise.”
Carla had her sights set on racing in the first Xterra of 2010 in Buffelspoort on Sunday 30 January, as well as in Grabouw (20 February), but clearly that wont now happen. More importantly though she had her eyes set on racing on the US Xterra circuit from June to August. “I’m still hopeful, but will only race there if I am in decent shape. I am going to give myself enough time to heal and will not force the rehab. I want to be 100% healthy before I start racing again, that said, I would love to be able to be on the start line at the South African Championships in Germiston on 21 March.”
For now, Carla Germishuys is taking things day by day and is looking forward to her wedding on 21 April.
