Duathlon Series gets underway
Wednesday, 03 March 2010
The ever popular Momentum Health iFlex National Duathlon Series 2010, powered by PeptoPro, gets underway this weekend in Roodeplaat on Sunday 7 March.
The format of run-cycle-run is introducing more and more entrants to the sport who may be a little daunted by the swim, bike, run format of the triathlon, but who relish the multidiscipline challenge.
It is a series which has seen the likes of Andrea Steyn rise to prominence in both Duathlon and Triathlon. Steyn is the current SA and Africa Triathlon Champion, as well as the South African Duathlon Champion and represented South Africa at the World Duathlon Championships where she finished 6th. Likewise, names such as Bryce Viegas, Richard Murray and Brand Du Plessis are household names in South African duathlon. Du Plessis won the South African title in 2009 as well as finishing 5th at the world championships in 2008.
But this is not all about the elites, but rather an event the whole family can do. A kids category for 5-10 year old’s and 11-14 year old’s consists of a 500m run, 2.5km bike and run and 1km run, 5km bike and 1 km run respectively. Whilst the more senior athletes face a 5km run 20km and 2.5km run.
The first event at Roodeplaat Dam is on Sunday 7 March then Cape Town 18 March, Johannesburg (9 May), PE (1 August), Durban (15 August) and Potchefstroom (19 September).
